Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to reveal the reasons of “Fear of Missing Out” (FoMO), which is a relatively new phenomenon in the Business and Organizational Behavior literature, causes many undesirable consequences such as social media addiction, problematic smartphone use and cyberloafing that negatively affect the working life of individuals. In this study, data were collected through questionnaires from 443 employees working in state-owned banks and private banks in Turkey. The questionnaires in this study consist of questions about the demographic characteristics, workload and FoMO levels of the employees in the banking sector. To test the hypotheses of study, data were analysed using independent samples t-test, one way Anova and regression analysis. According to the results obtained, while there is a negative relationship between age and FoMO and between education level and FoMO; there is a positive relationship between the workload and FoMO. The gender and marital status do not affect FoMO. This study is the first study in the literature in which FoMO’s precessors are examined in a sample of a particular occupational group.
